Drew has continued to improve each day. It's been a slow recovery, but he's definitely back to the old Drew. Because the infection is under control now, we have been waiting for those numbers to rebound before we can be released. He's gotten 2 platelet transfusions in the last few days, and a blood transfusion when we first arrived last week. And of course lots of fluids...So they are doing everything they can to give his counts a boost! In the mean time, I got our hearing test rescheduled from next week, to Monday since we were already here, as well as an echocardiogram (pictured) moved to yesterday from next week--saving us some outpatient appointments. The hearing test indicated mild high frequency hearing loss already. Chemo apparently is hard on hearing, and it's actually pretty typical to have some loss in hearing after going through all that he has. So a more in depth evaluation will be done after we are done with transplant, where we'll get more intense chemotherapy, before they can say how much damage he's gotten for sure. But he very well may need hearing aids after this is all over. Something to get used to, but in the end, a small price to pay to have him around! The echocardiogram was just a followup to make sure his heart isn't having any issues from treatment as well, which I assume went well. I still haven't heard an official report on that actually! But around here I've learned that no news is good news. So it's been a productive week after all. And this mornings lab work shows our white count over the line--so today the wait is most likely over, and we'll be heading out of here! We'll find out for sure on rounds this morning!
Next week we still have a battery of test to pass before we go into transplant, which is scheduled to begin on Friday, June 17th. We have a meeting this Friday that Oncology set up to discuss a change to the transplant plan. Something new that shows lots of promise (increased survival rates) and Drew is a candidate for. We don't know all the details yet, but please pray that all our questions are answered, and God gives us wisdom in deciding the right path for Drew to beat this!
